There are times when I prefer pictures in black and white. Usually, it depends on what the focus of picture is. The ones that speak to me the most are when there is not a face to focus on... Depending on the face, of course, but with these ones... These speak for themselves.

A Challenge

So, a good friend of mine is always posting pictures of himself on his Facebook page... So one day I suggested we do a photoshoot, and let me tell you... He was all for it! However, I've never shot anyone like him. (You'll see what I mean) So, on Tuesday, we hung out at his house and we started taking pictures. I wasn't sure how to approach it at first, but then... It just started working.

You see... He has this very laid back attitude. I wanted to capture that, so I put them in black and white. You can focus on his eyes and how expressive they are. All in all... I think this challenge was a success.

Camera Love

Well, I've had a few requests recently as to what kind of camera I use, what kind of processing program I use, and where I get my photos printed... So, why not do a post? :)

First things first:

I have a Canon Rebel DSLR Camera that I use. I picked this baby up at a pawn shop downtown for $250 a couple Christmas's ago. Needless to say, it's been through a lot since then. Snow, The Color Festival, the Oceans of Hawaii. (If you don't believe me, just look back through my posts). This thing is amazing. I have two lenses that I use: a short range and tele-photo lens. Both of the Canon variety.

Next: I use Photoshop. However, not that often. The only thing I'll ever really play with is the levels to lighten a picture and the curves, to increase the contrast of the picture, if I feel the color didn't come out well. Like this one:

Because he was surrounded by a white back ground, he looked a little washed out, so I lightened the levels and balanced the curves so his black coat would stand out more. And check out his eyes. So cute!!

There are all sorts of Photoshop Tutorials out there, the main ones that I've found that I love come from http://photoshoptutorials.ws/. Can't afford Photoshop? There are plenty of free photo editing softwares available online. Several of my friends use Pixlr.com/editor and Picnik.com they're both free and you don't necessarily have to make an account to use them.

Last: I have had my photos printed at all sorts of places. However, the one that I've enjoyed the most is WinkFlash.

They have a special for first time users that you can get 50 4x6 prints for free, using the code 50 FREE, and get $.99 shipping as well. You can usually find other codes online for specials or coupons that'll make ordering through them cheap. They also have larger print sizes and auto correct on pictures, so if you don't want to edit them yourself, they'll do it for you!

More Snow!

I know y'all have to be loving the snow as much as I am, minus one little lady who shall remained unnamed in this post (Her name starts with an L). Today, I went for a little expedition... A 5 hour long snowshoe expedition, that is. It was heaven!!!

With my dear friend Capone came with me, and believe me! We got some amazing glamour shots... that I will be posting tomorrow! Haha... Check back soon!

Vintage Photos

Taken in Dillon, Montana, way back when... Decided I'd play with them to see what I could get. I loved the vintage feel of the walls and peeling paint, that I couldn't help but leave them as they were.

These little buildings were in the back of an alley way just off the main strip through town... Seems like almost everything has been preserved in this town, although, the reasons why aren't exactly the best. When you're in Nowhere, Montana, people just get lazy and don't remove things... which is why I'm grateful for Nowhere, Montana.

We went to Hardware Ranch a while ago, and I managed to take a series of pictures of the amazing work horses that they have pull their wagons. Not on purpose, mind you. It's a very serious, and lucky, coincidence.

Dillon

On a recent trip to Dillon Montana, I had some extra time to go explore the small town. Home to Gracie's Antiques and oh so much more. Charm graced the old buildings that were still in use... History waited around every corner... And comfort could be found in the people there.

This rock wall, just outside of Gracie's was built by the owner way back when... from all sorts of geological wonders found within a 5 mile radius of Dillon. The current owner said that she gets all sorts of visitors, students, and even professionals who come to look at her wall and identify the rocks. It was so amazing.

Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!

Okay... so maybe I didn't get to see any bears... or lions... but MAN! I got some amazing pictures of the tigers at the zoo a couple weekends ago!

Oh my lord. I haven't had so much fun since the last time I went to the zoo... and that was when I was 12. Loved loved loved it!!

More Portraits

Over the last few weeks I have been so busy! I have not had time to even think, but I knew as soon as I saw the heavy frost all over the trees in Logan that I HAD to do a photoshoot of it. My sisters have requested that I post some more photography tips, so I thought this was an ideal example.

Tip 1:

Play with your surroundings. There are so many things that you can create by moving around. For this shoot, I simply had Laura, my model, walk around and glance back at me, so I could catch her natural movements and personality.

Tip 2

Use the rule of thirds... or not. You can grid your frame into nine squares and place your model according to that. Or you can just play with the frame. I will focus in on my model and then pull the frame over to the left or the right, so it adds interest to the background. I love this picture of Laura, because she stands out in all the frost, but you still get to see the frost.

Tip 3

Don't be afraid to do a close-up. If the back-ground isn't so interesting, focus on your model. It gives an extra emphasis on the model to have a blurry background. Plus, you can add interest to the foreground, like the chairs in the bottom of the picture.

Tip 4

There's usually one thing that I'll mention to my models about posing... Shoulders. If the models shoulders are squared towards the photographer, they are going to appear wider. If they are slightly angled away from the photographer, they appear slimmer... and I find that it brings on a more casual pose. You can really emphasize the face by having the model angle their shoulders away from you and framing their face with something, like the branches in the picture above.

Animals. I love working with them, as they never worry about having a camera around. Most of the time they are curious... but really, they just don't care. It's so much easier to catch moments and get the real personality in pictures when the model doesn't pay attention to the camera. The less a model pays attention to the camera, the more expressive they seem to me. You can catch that one feeling or expression that lasts for a just a moment, creating a moving, deep portrait that lasts for more than a lifetime.

I recently went down to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument... My home sweet home. <3 We toured around the Burr Trail, where my grandpa used to graze his cattle during the winter. Talk about an amazing experience!

Yellowstone

Yellowstone. One of the most visited parks on the earth. Whether you are going to see Old Faithful, the wildlife, fishing, or just site seeing, it's hard to NOT take a picture! Here are few of the million that I took over a 3 day visit this last week.

I believe that this is called Big Springs. This is where the rivers bubble up from an underground aquifer at a cool 52 degrees Fahrenheit. I swear that the rocks were blue from the cold!!

Fishing with my friend, Junior. He was REALLY excited for fishing at the Coffee Pot.

And of course. We saw a Moose. Most of my pictures were of it's caboose, though. I swear it had a vendetta against me. :)

Perspectives

Perspectives... view, angles, so on and so forth. So which is the best? I say try ALL of them. I have a habit of trying to break down my subject to find little details that no one would really notice, unless they are pointed out. So looking at this landscape, you could capture it in a landscape view...

Portrait view, which seems to emphasize the water more than the landscape around it...

Or a completely different angle, like this one taken from above the waterfall. Different angles and views bring out different characteristics or details. I love that there is more than one way to take a picture, so make every picture your own! Don't be afraid to step outside the box and capture the unique details in life.

Here are some of the portraits that I've taken of my nephews and one of my little sister. I love having color in the background, like the purple petunias or the water. It really helps bring out the subject in each picture.

Black and white pictures are a little bit harder to really 'pop' out the subject. I try to select a background that really contrasts with the character of the subject, so if the subject has dark hair, and I'm taking a close-up, I would choose a really light background. Contrast can really make a picture spectacular.

I went on a canoeing trip with Common Ground, an AmeriCorps organization that provides activities for people with disabilities. Every activity I've been on has been simply amazing, so I've volunteered to be their Photographer. The thing is that the people going on the trips and activities are not disabled, most of them outperform me every time! They are so amazing and strong. So, this post is for them.

To me, photography is capturing life within one small frame of time. I focus on the small moments in life that aren't always seen: a sidewalk artist with a passion for her work, a sunbathing seaturtle on the North Shore of Hawaii, and so much more. Instead of keeping all of these wonderful moments to myself, I figured I would share them. This is for all of my friends, family, and loved ones who have told me to become a photographer.
